• Lake Como
    Places of the heart

With the unmistakable shape of an inverted Y, it is perhaps the most famous lake in Italy and the one most visited by international tourists, thanks also to the many VIPs who choose it every year as their holiday destination or who even stay there in their own home.

    alessandro manzoni

Manzoni immortalized it in the beginning of his famous novel, The Betrothed, and for this reason, we all since childhood are used to bearing in mind the musicality of its name.

It's Italy's deepest lake with the greatest perimeter extension and its always mild climate, despite its position at the foot of the Alps, makes this lake a pleasant destination throughout the year, also because of the historical-artistic wealth that can be found around this water basin. The best known towns are those of Como and Lecco, each located on one of the two branches. But there are many places to visit and explore: Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna and Cernobbio, just to name a few.

Here we reveal some places in the heart of MUSA, but we can't wait to have you as our guests in the hotel to tell you about others.

Comacina Island

In the Tremezzina Municipality, on an inlet on the lake's Como branch, is Comacina Island, Italy's northernmost area where thanks to a particularly mild climate, olives are grown. The islet's articulated history has led it to be owned today by the Accademia di Brera, in Milan.

To visit the baroque church of San Giovanni, which is also the island's patron saint: every year, on June 24, a solemn procession of boats takes place, with a fireworks display on the lake. Of great historical and artistic interest are also the remains of the Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, from the 11th century, with a crypt, and those of other churches (Santa Maria del Portico, San Pietro in Castello and Santi Faustino and Giovita).

Villa Balbianello (part of FAI)

Protected by the Italian Environment Fund, the Villa del Balbianello is located in Lenno, on the shores of Lake Como. Positioned on the tip of the Lavedo promontory, it was built in the late 1700s on a pre-existing Franciscan monastery. Passed around by various owners, who from time to time worked to enrich it with friezes, works of art and fine furnishings, today it is shown to visitors in all its splendor, acquired over the years.

The beauty of this villa has made it a sought-after film location for international films, such as John Irvin's A Month at the Lake (1995), George Lucas' Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) and Martin Cambell's Casino Royale (2006).

The Tremezzina

A spectacular town overlooking Lake Como, La Tremezzina is a scattered municipality that stems from the merging of the municipalities of Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo and Ossuccio. In this extended territory, it's possible to admire numerous prestigious religious architectures; for example, the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is part of the group of nine pre-alpine Sacred Mountains which are part of UNESCO and therefore a World Heritage Site. The church - Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso - was built on an impervious terrain on which a previous building of worship stood. The 14 chapels are in Baroque style and embellished with 230 terracotta statues, made by different artists.

Next, a special mention goes to Villa Carlotta, located in Tremezzo, which houses works by Antonio Canova and Luigi Acquisti. Other noteworthy villas are: Villa Pessina, Villa Sola Busca, Villa Aureggi, Villa Monastero and Villa del Balbiano.

The Gardens of Villa Carlotta

Villa Carlotta also hosts a spectacular Italian garden, dating back to the time of the villa's construction. In perfect symmetry from the gate to the clock on the building's roof , it boasts topiary hedges (with various shapes), fountains, water features, statues, flower beds with geometric elements, terraces and balustrades.

A splendid climbing rose garden, camellias and a citrus tunnel give different strokes of color to this garden that is open to visitors throughout the year. And even tropical plants, hydrangeas, azaleas, arboreal rhododendrons, aromatic plants, ferns and monumental trees decorate and embellish this small green paradise.

The Gardens of Villa Melzi

Villa Melzi is located in Bellagio, one of the most beautiful towns on the shores of Lake Como. Designed and built by Francesco Melzi, Duke of Lodi, the Villa has a neoclassical style, but it is the park that has become the real jewel of the place. Styled by the architect Luigi Canonica and the botanist Luigi Villoresi, the garden is available to visitors with trees and flowers expertly distributed along the acres of the park, along with the statues, which adorn this green space.

Note the Japanese pond with aquatic plants, including water lilies, maples and Japanese cedars. Azaleas and rhododendrons bloom abundantly and color the garden.

  • Best hotel visit in a long time!
This hotel really requires plenty of praise after a fantastic 4 night stay there with a group of friends. The staff are outstanding. Extremely helpful, eager to please and the level of service was the best we have experienced in Italy.. We had a special lunch in the restaurant for my husbands birthday and the whole meal was outstanding with many little extras created by the brilliant young chefs. The bar menu was also enjoyed and the cocktails were fantastic, as were the wonderful bar staff. From the moment we arrived at Musa to the time that we left, we felt our visit was valued and appreciated by every member of staff. It made our visit very special and one that we won’t forget.

  • Do stay here if you have the chance!! This hotel blew our minds, magnificent stay. Small (12 rooms I think?) lakeside hotel, with all amenities. The level of service was unparalleled. Everything about the experience was artistic and thoughtfully designed. Amazing food, really beyond what we expected at a hotel. Plating, presentation, amuse bouche all amazing. Extremely warm and professional staff. Dropped a napkin, in 15 seconds a new one was presented to me. Little details throughout, a welcome call before we arrived, fresh food welcoming us to the room. Plenty of views from restaurant, lounge, and room of Lake Como.

  • Very nice upscale boutique hotel on Lake Como. There is a limited amount of guest rooms making it a cozy and ‘at home’ experience while enjoying all the comforts of a superior luxury hotel. If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of larger venues, this place is it. The staff were great, caring, attentive and very helpful. The bar and the restaurant have a very good selection of food on the go / cocktails and fine dining respectively. There is also a pool area to rest and lounge around along with a spa service. It is a little away from the main towns but there are a couple nice restaurants in walking distance like Locanda Tirlindana. Well worth the stay.

  • My husband and I stayed here and we were SO impressed by the location, service, food, and overall atmosphere. Could not recommend this place more! It was quiet and luxury. The service was exceptional and very personal. They arranged us dinner reservations and transportation every night. They even helped us line up lake activities. The room was beautiful and amenities were great. Highly highly recommend staying here.

  • Sublime escapade
